An initial statement

The idea of sustainability has been a topic of recent human history. Prior to the industrial revolution, there were plenty of resources and pollution was virtually nonexistent. After the industrial revolution, however, the demand of raw materials grew exponentially. Although this wasn’t a major problem at first, it became increasingly difficult as the world’s resources dwindled. You will see that sustainability is a huge issue in the modern world. Companies of today are far more conscious of sustainability than those in the past. Ford Motor Company is an excellent example.

Ford Motor Company Analysis

Ford is a Fortune 100 company and a leader in vehicle production. Ford has been “A Force For Good” through its immense influence. Ford insists on sourcing responsibly for all materials that are used to make their vehicles. Ford promotes sustainable resource harvesting and tries to ensure that future generations can have access to these vital natural resources. This company’s vision and actions have earned them the title of “Top 100 Conflict Minerals Influence Leaderships” for the third year running (FSR). This list honors companies that use materials that were legally and reliably produced. Pollution is another important aspect of sustainability. Global temperatures have risen as a result of climate change. This is because greenhouse gases are being produced. When greenhouse gases like methane or carbon dioxide are released into our atmosphere, it begins to insulate our planet’s surface. If this happens, the increase in temperatures will start to impact the entire world. Major carbon dioxide producers are automobiles that use combustion engines.

Ford Motor Company recognized this and devised a plan for reducing their carbon footprint. Their new vehicles already have a lower carbon dioxide output, but there is more. The Eco-boost models they produce produce less polluting than their predecessors. The company fully embraces these engines’ efficiency. They are available in a range of vehicles, including the Mustang, F-150 and F-150. Ford also invested $11 million in electric vehicles. Ford has also committed $11 billion to the production of electric vehicles.

Ford Motor Company also founded IONITY. A joint effort among several big car companies, it is a member of which Ford Motor Company is a founding Member. Their goal is to establish 400 charging stations for electric cars in Europe by 2020 (media.ford.com). Ford made a commitment in 2010 to reduce its greenhouse gases by 30 percent per vehicle. This was by 2025, according to media.ford.com. This was a significant achievement and Ford achieved it by 2017. According to media.ford.com, the emissions reduction was equivalent to driving 728,000 passenger cars for a year. They are committed to reducing the emissions of the Earth’s future generations.

Another important process to ensure sustainability is recycling. It’s possible to reuse materials that have been used previously and transform them into new products. Ford has been a pioneer in this area with the Escape & Focus. These models can be recycled up to 80%. These are the two most widely used vehicles in the company’s fleet. This will make a big impact when they end up in a scrapyard. Ford also uses “sustainable fabrics” in all of its vehicles (www.smartcitiesdive.com). The Michigan plant does not waste any paint fumes. These gases can be recycled or used to fuel production. Ford’s manufacturing plants employ geothermal cooling. This cooling system is completely renewable. This also lowers the power required for cooling other plants.

Ford doesn’t just want to preserve raw materials. They also aim to preserve the most essential natural resource, freshwater. Ford has plants located in poorer countries and is working to conserve fresh water, even though it’s not an issue for Americans. These countries include South Africa, India, Mexico. These plants require a lot water to make paint. These areas have a shortage of water, which is why this problem exists. Ford realized the environmental damage that Ford was causing by using more water than they originally thought was necessary. Ford responded quickly by drastically reducing their water consumption. Ford has seen a 62.5% reduction in its “operationalwater use” since 2000.

This resulted in a reduction of 10.4 billion gallons (FSR).

Ford maintained its commitment to this plan in 2017 and decreased water consumption by another 2%. Ford is a leader in innovation and sustainability. Ford has made this possible by continually improving, setting goals that help the planet’s future, and then going above and past to accomplish those goals. They are leaders in managing the materials they use, increasing recyclability and reducing water consumption. They care deeply about the Earth and those who will inherit it. Ford is a true “Force For Good” because they have made integrity and responsibility their core values.
